Sleijster

From 1625 until 1719 all names are mentioned here above. The first time that we read the name "Sleijster" with the present way of writing is already in 1625 by Thomas' marriage, and in 1634 on his billet list.
But after that, this way of writing appears only in 1706 (see the "!").
In 1634 we find again the "t" in the name Sleijster; and after that the "t" appears only in the years 1677 (Sleyter) and1679 (Sleisters), so only very irregular.

From the fourth generation there is more often written "Sleijster", except for only a few times "Sleister".

The Sleijsters of the fourth generation (± 1720-1750) used with their marriage, decease and the baptismal registering of their children only 9 times of the 20 (45%) a divergent writing.

With the fifth generation (± 1750-1780) they used 4 of the 21 times (19%) a divergent writing.

With the sixth generation (± 1780-1810) they used 1 of the 40 times (2,5%) a divergent writing.

From the introduction of the the Burgher State ("Burgerlijke Stand") in 1811 we only find the present name Sleijster, and sometimes Sleyster.

As you  can see there were a lot of several writings between 1600 and 1800.
From 1800 they all use the name Sleijster.

Sleyster

But the Sleijsters who emigrated from 1846 untill 1875 to the USA got there the name "Sleyster". In the USA the "ij" is not used.

Here in Holland the most Sleijsters write their name: Sleijster. But there are also here in Holland many Sleijsters who write their name as Sleyster. The whole Amsterdam-Sleijster-branch writes Sleyster. And also the branch of my grandfathers brother Arend Jan (He4) does so. So you see it does not matter.

So I claimed also the domainname www.sleyster.nl for the Sleijster-site.

Jurriaen Sleijster is a member of the Amsterdam-branch. They all use the name Sleyster. He erroneously enrolled once the name Sleijster but because he lives and works in England everybody has big problems with the pronunciation.

Sleister

Before 1800 sometimes the name Sleister was used. I think that the name "Sleister" also was used by a Dutch emigrant. But I still could not get the right information from the Sleisters who live in America. I corresponded with several Sleisters but they don't have

In the American immigrantsregister is on 23 januar 1847 registered a certain:
J. Sleister, 44 years old, with
Johanna (48)
P (11)
A (9)
G (8)
M (5)
G (1 year)
from Gelderland in The Netherlands
with destination: Holland, Michigan
I do not have a family in my tree that corresponds exact with this family.
That seems rather strange to me, cause my tree is as good as complete.
So I was hardly going to think that this family is not of the Sleyster family.
But... this Sleister did came from The Netherlands.

So he was not someone from Germany who changed his name.
